about

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (John 1:1-5 ESV)

In our Christian understanding, the WORD has a combination of meanings. Not only is it a word we use to describe the Biblical scriptures we base our lives upon, but it is also a word used in the first chapter of John to describe the physical presence of God in Jesus at his birth. "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14 NIV)

This song is a longing for the WORD to breathe life again – both in the life-changing power of Jesus, the WORD, and the life-giving WORD of Holy Scripture. Our belief as Christians is that God continues to speak to us through the words of scripture; they are his voice still speaking throughout the ages. It is also a longing for Jesus - the WORD - to breathe his life in us again. The two go hand in hand, for in reading the Word of God, Jesus the WORD is revealed. It is there that the refreshing rivers of life come flowing again.

lyrics

Verse 1:
As it was from the beginning,
You’ve held it all within Your hand.
Speaking words into existence,
Creation formed at Your command;
The Life and Light of every man.

Chorus:
WORD of God, breathe on me,
Bring new life into these bones.
Let Your WORD cover me,
Speaking peace and love and hope,
That your WORD would guide me home,
WORD of God.

Verse 2:
In a quiet, lowly stable,
The WORD of God came down to breathe,
Bringing life to broken place,
Hope to all who would believe,
Speak those words again to me.

Bridge
That Your WORD would be my peace,
Let your WORD deliver me.

Last Chorus
WORD of God, breathe on me,
Bring new life into these bones.
Let Your WORD cover me,
Speaking peace and love and hope,
That your WORD would guide me home,
Let your WORD come make me whole,
WORD of God.
