about

The first thing you will notice about this recording is its simplicity. There are no electric guitars. No over-polished vocals or keyboard parts. No string sections or nifty production gimmicks. I wanted to strip these songs down to their basic form and structure to reveal the simple power of their melody, lyric, and beauty of expression. My goal is that by expressing it in this manner natural and excellent artistry will allow the truth, beauty, and creativity of God to be seen.

The second objective of this recording was to take the music out of its comfort zone and place it in the hands of musicians from a completely different line of artistry. If you've ever seen a good jazz trio live, you have witnessed a synergy of forms, styles and expressions converging to create a beautiful, musical art form. My desire was to bring some of those elements – technical skill, improvisation, creativity, liberty, individuality – and transfer them to the music of the church. Aside from myself, the musicians on this recording don't typically play these songs in a corporate worship setting each week or listen to the latest worship music. Their approach to this music is fresh and innovative. And as a result, I think we've brought a kind of new life to these songs.

Finally, the title of this recording is a reference to Romans 12:1-2, the foundation for the song, "Passion." This passage of scripture, written by the Apostle Paul, instructs us that worship is first and foremost a way of living. In Paul's words, we are to present ourselves as "living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God." Dallas Willard, in his book Renovation Of The Heart, describes this as surrendering "a lesser, dying self for a greater eternal one – the person God intended in creating you." In becoming that person and striving toward Christ-likeness, we lay before God our ultimate act of worship. The ways in which we convey our worship, including the use of music, through our corporate and personal experiences are simply the outworking of that life.

I hope the expressions recorded here will inspire and encourage you to live a life transformed for His honor...so that Christ may be seen in you.
